The Jail's Story

Inveraray Jail has a rich history behind it. Since its opening to the public as a living museum in 1989, visitors can step back in time to see for themselves the impressive courthouse where actual court cases are re-enacted from historical records.

They can also share in the courtroom drama with accurate models dressed in authentic costumes sitting lifelike on the court's public and jury benches, and, of course, the Judge himself.

It's the next best thing to time travel!

You can also explore the old prison, the new prison, and get locked up in the rebuilt Airing Yards. Find out about jail history, discover your roots in our prison records, and learn about life in jail and the infamous prison escapes.

Did You Know?
Inveraray is an early example of a 'New Town'. The old town was demolished by the Duke between 1750 and 1776 in order that the grounds in front of the Castle could be landscaped. The 'New Town's' first buildings were completed in 1753 and by 1820 the town looked much as it does today.
