The sun doesn’t always shine on the west coast of Scotland and this summer’s been a particularly wet one! But don’t let that stop you from getting out and about. There are loads of great things to do in Inveraray on a rainy day.
Visit Inveraray Castle
The iconic Inveraray Castle is the ancestral home of the Duke of Argyll, Chief of the Clan Campbell, and is one of Scotland’s most magnificent buildings. The castle’s imposing size and impressive turrets are visible for miles around. Inside, view the lavish State Dining Room, the tapestries and the stunning Armoury Hall with its walls adorned with muskets, pole-arms and axes. Pop into the traditional tearoom for delicious home-baking.
Climb up Duke’s Tower
The Inveraray Bell Tower is just a stone’s throw from the jail. It’s well worth making the effort to climb the 176 steps to the top of the tower for the stunning views over Inveraray and Loch Fyne to the Arrochar Alps beyond. Rain and clouds can make the landscape look spectacularly moody and dramatic. It’s open from July to September.
Check out the Loch Fyne Whisky shop
Your wet weather list should include a visit to the famous Loch Fyne Whisky Shop, an award-winning vendor of whisky and whisky-related products on Inveraray’s High Street. Whether you’re popping in for a browse, a chat or in search of a hidden gem, you’ll be greeted by friendly whisky enthusiasts and the sight of hundreds of bottles lining every wall from floor to ceiling. Now that should chase away any rainy-day blues.
Go underground
Just a short drive from Inveraray lies one of the hidden wonders of the southern Highlands. Cruachan Power Station is buried deep within Ben Cruachan one kilometre below the ground – so well away from any wild weather. It’s an amazing engineering achievement. At its centre lies a massive cavern, high enough to house the Tower of London! You can take a guided tour into the heart of the hollow mountain and explore the visitor centre and free exhibition. There’s also a café and gift shop.
Visit Inveraray Jail
Come rain or shine, Inveraray Jail is a brilliant day out for all the family. Come and meet the prisoners, hear their stories and find out more about life in a Victorian jail.
